Description and Responsibilities

About the Role

Develop a quality control unit operating against the principles of ISO 17025. Construct a sustainable department structure through the evaluation of resource needs with associated training matrices, proficiency evaluation and succession/sustainability planning of staff. Ensure testing is performed per defined schedule and executed per written procedure, either benchmarked or obtained from industry validated methodology. Ensure the evaluation of raw materials, WIP and finished goods are appropriate and controlled under a positive release system to support business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, modify and approve laboratory procedures outlining ways of working
  • Audit current test methods against industry best practices and assurance of written procedural compliance
  • Develop training roadmap for existing and new hires
  • Benchmark laboratory against ISO 17025 and fill gaps, where identified
  • Evaluate laboratory costs for internal vs. external testing
  • Investigate alternate testing methodologies to ensure the most accurate and efficient evaluation of material
  • Manage the staff to support 24/7 operations
  • Manage the release of materials against defined timelines
  • Lead laboratory investigations, where needed
  • Support plant investigations, where needed
  • Collaborate cross-functionally in support of appropriate raw material, WIP and finished product sampling and testing requirements
  • Implement the evaluation of process capability, leveraging quality control data against available systems towards the development of internal process parameters and the investigation of out of trend data.


  • Direct management of quality control staff
  • The position has the authority to develop, implement and audit programs directly related to assigned projects
  • Provides disposition of materials with the support of the Quality Assurance Manager


Key competencies:

  • Working knowledge of GMP, Microbiology, GLP, Hygiene controls, Validation and HACCP principals.
  • Competencies in IT based applications such as LIMS, SAP etc.
  • Ability to evaluate pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing against established regulations.
  • Effectively train essential plant employees in excipient principles and ISO initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement
  • Affect change through indirect leadership
  • Write SOPs and work instructions
  • Effectively work with production team and other members of quality team to develop and maintain a robust and effective quality management system
  • Possess excellent written and verbal skills and be proficient at Word, Excel, PowerPoint


  • BS degree in science related field.
  •  5+ years practical experience in a quality control leadership position
